Frankly, I hate polishing/perfecting a track. It feels like I’m su􀀁ocating the humanity from the song. Both our previous release Lookout Below, and now Closer 2, were recorded in one go. The songs sound immediate and messy, just like the headspace of where we were when we made them.

I hope you enjoy the song as well. It was very fun to make. To get the drums, I heard a pirate, metal shanty on a music forum. I was looking for something intense but controlled; like something you’d hear on Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It In People, Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm, and The National’s Boxer.

Thankfully James, the pirate drummer, was willing to collaborate with me despite living across the pond and having never spoken a word with me prior.

When he asked how I wanted him to mic the drums, I was adamant that he use the same microphone setup I used for recording my guitar and vocals. His phone.
